Of course, I don’t know about you, on this subject, but I know when I was a kid. I certainly would’ve enjoyed more unschooling activities.
And I say more because I actually did enjoy a lot of unschooling activities.
The problem was they were at home. But I still had to go to school. For actual school activities and curriculum. Yeah, I am, as a friend of mine used to say, a recovering public school graduate. Maybe you can relate. Most people I know can.
But I discovered, recently, there’s a type of homeschool known as Unschooling. And, after seeing video after video of horrific things going on in public school classrooms, I think this is a viable option that should be explored. Here’s a simple description I read:
Unschooling basically goes with the interests of the child. There is no set curriculum. If a child is interested in butterflies, you research and learn about butterflies until the child is satisfied. If he develops an interest in race cars, you give him information on race cars.
Did you notice how that description must’ve been written by someone with a bit more, shall we say, age on them? Because someone these days wouldn’t use the pronoun, he, and an activity like race, cars, to describe Unschooling for us. No, I think the description would be a lot more generic at best. And downright feminized at worst. Nothing against the feminine gender. It’s just that feminization of everything is so irritating now.
Anyway…
The cool thing about Unschooling is that it almost sounds like, or maybe I should say feels like, a biblical perspective. There’s a verse in Proverbs, in the Bible, that says: Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.
See? God inspired Solomon to use the he pronoun.
And I think it’s good to follow God’s ways in these things.
So, if you get a train up a child in the way, he should go, it’s probably a good idea to know which way that is. And the best way to know what that is, is to observe children from the time they’re able to sit up and start taking on their own personality. Watch them closely. See what they’re good at naturally. Pay attention for crying out loud. It might not always be obvious right away. But keep watching.
And when you figure out the thing or things, they do well, then figure out how to help them train to the point of making a living with that skill or those skills. I believe, if a parent does that, then the rule of thumb that when the child is old, he will not depart from. It makes a whole lotta sense. Because it’ll be his sustenance. And you know what they say, when you do what you love, you never work a day in your life. (sounds good, but it’s not completely true)
So my encouragement for your day, today, is to find a way to homeschool your kids or grandkids. Homeschool is where the ultimate Unschooling activities will take place. And it’s the only kind of school where you can be sure the teacher loves your children.
Here’s a short rhyme I wrote to encourage and motivate you even a little bit more. Because time flies…
You might win a few things in this life,
And you might even win a whole lot.
But you’ll lose everything if you don’t trust the King
Who has given you all that He’s got.
Know that nothing is too hard for God.
He can help you through all of your fears.
If your gold turns to rust, or your diamonds to dust,
Only God can dry all of your tears.
Make the most of the moments you have.
They fly by in the blink of an eye.
Don’t waste time in the dark, jump inside of the ark
