54 years ago, today, something stupid happened. And a few people made a bunch of money because of it. Yeah, apparently there were lots of people in America and England who played a part in this event. In fact, I’m sure there were plenty of them who celebrated it.
And it wasn’t the only time something stupid happened like that.
But I’m not gonna hide the names to protect the so-called innocent. In fact, it all started with some guy named C. Carson Parks. He wrote it all down. So, there’s no denying he’s the culprit. But about a year after he wrote it, Frank Sinatra got involved. Yeah, you know if Frankie’s involved there’s gonna be trouble. Right?
OK, no more build up. I’m talkin’ about Frank Sinatra’s hit song, with his daughter Nancy, “Somethin’ Stupid.” It was 54 years ago today it went to number 1 in England. And they were the only father/daughter duo to have a number 1 hit there. And C. Carson Parks was the songwriter.
Nicole Kidman also sang Somethin’ Stupid with a guy named Robbie Williams back in 2001. And they had a number 1 hit with the song, too.
So, there’s proof positive that lots of people are even willing to pay for somethin’ stupid.
Like freedom for example.
Yeah, people are even willing to give up freedom in the name of “safety.” But something stupid always happens when people start giving up freedom just so they can feel safe and virtuous.
At first, it seems innocent. It’s just a tiny freedom. Like not being able to go into a favorite coffee shop without a mask. But then, it’s not being able to go into that coffee shop at all. Because that coffee shop owner wanted his patrons to feel normal and enjoy coffee and pastry and reading time without a stupid mask.
Then, some persons of influence suggest you give up a little more.
Like…hmm…let’s say…just a few less bullets. How could that possibly be a bad thing? And what’s a few less bullets in the grand scheme of things. Or here’s an idea. What if you tax all the bullets? And tax all the devices that hold bullets? Sure. It’ll look like you wanna ban them. But you can actually make some serious cash.
And then the pyramid scheme starts to gain momentum. And next thing you know those persons of influence discover lots of people are willing to give up freedom after freedom. So, they seize the opportunity to make a bundle for themselves and their closest cronies…er friends.
Yeah, it looks like the biggest return on investment is in the world of politics. Because it’s typically zero dollars in and millions out. Sure, I’m probably just a sarcastic boomer with an axe to grind. But it doesn’t mean I’m wrong.
So, maybe I’ll invest in law
Instead of riding this see-saw
Where peasants flourish in the mud
And drown in socialism’s flood.
