Elgielene is in the kitchen, making some very wonderfully aromatic foods for us to enjoy for lunch in a couple of hours. And she loves to listen to music on a particular channel on Pandora while she works. Right now I can hear in the background one of my favorite Elton John songs. Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters. And if you’ve never really paid attention to the lyrics, you might’ve missed what I believe even Elton John missed in them.
Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters isn’t about a painting and children’s book characters.
That last sentence is driving my autocorrect crazy. Because it has a plural noun and a singular verb. And the poor little software is keeping a dotted line underneath the verb to nudge me into making it right. Because software doesn’t recognize the noun as a song title. I’m sure it can be trained to recognize that. But that ain’t my job. So I can sit here smiling at its consternation.
Anyway…
Back to what Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters says that I’m sure most people would’ve missed and still miss.
First, Bernie Taupin wrote a line that says I thank the Lord, there’s people out there like you. And that line repeats in one way or another at least a couple more times.
Then, Bernie wrote a chorus that I bet he didn’t fully understand. He might have consciously meant something else. But I believe the good Lord, can weave His messages into secular songs even when the songwriters themselves don’t know it. I can’t prove it. It’s more of a gut feeling. But I believe I’m right. So Bernie’s chorus says:
While Mona Lisas and mad hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around and say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can’t and that is why
They know not if it’s dark outside or light
Yeah, if you don’t look up, you can’t see the light.
And “good morning to the night” is likely a reference to greeting the dark side. God wrote in his book, the Bible, that men prefer the darkness because their deeds are evil. And that eventually leads to so much darkness they can’t even see the light when it shines. By the way, you and I are currently the light bearers in this world. I think that’s why Mr. Taupin wrote this verse:
Until you’ve seen this trash can dream come true
You stand at the edge while people run you through
And I thank the Lord there’s people out there like you
I thank the Lord there’s people out there like you
There’s quite a bit more I could say about the song lyrics. But I’m just sharing this today to encourage you to keep your light shining bright. Because the world is getting darker and darker and darker. And you never can tell which Mona Lisas and mad hatters, you come in contact with, might thank the Lord there’s people out there like YOU.
Ponder that today. But before you do, ponder this:
