Get your smile on. Tony Funderburk's writing for kids might help you do that.

Get your smile on. What are you so worried about? Is this day so much different than all the others you’ve survived?

You’re a beautifully designed creature with a very special set of gifts. You can taste and smell and hear and see and feel things. And you have about one hundred billion brain cells to store all those flavors and scents and sounds and sights and feelings in. Then your brain can take what it remembers and make pictures in your head. Pictures only you can see.

How awesome is that? Pretty awesome, I’d say.

Here’s another reason to get your smile on. It’s a new day. Today is another day you woke up. That means you have another day to do something for someone. What will you do? Put on a frown and wonder why nobody wants to do nice things for you? Or put on your smile and find somebody who could use your help?

I can tell you this…anytime you help someone it feels so much better than just trying to get what you want all the time. And that feeling lasts a lot longer, too. So, just remember this…

Get Your Smile On

Troubles in this life might never be gone,
But go ahead and get your smile on.
You might start the day with a big, fat yawn,
But go ahead and get your smile on.

Parents might say go out and mow the lawn,
But go ahead and get your smile on.
People might laugh at the pictures you’ve drawn,
But go ahead and get your smile on.

You might be a duck and never the swan,
But go ahead and get your smile on.
You can still fly high in a brand new dawn,
So go ahead and get your smile on.

Twenty two words about twenty two words...it's all part of Tony Funderburk's writing for kids.

Twenty two words can’t say much. But twenty two words can also say more than enough. Their meaning really depends on which words, who’s saying them, and how they’re spoken.

I’ve been around people who could use one foul word in twenty two ways…all of which were just as foul and ridiculous as the first. And I’ve also been around a few people who could take twenty two words and turn them into a most comforting message in a greeting card, or bedside talk with a child, or final words for a dearly departed loved one.

As for me…I love wordplay. And playing with words and their rhythms and syllables. I don’t always have a secret reason for my rhymes, but most times I do. So, I wonder if you can find the two secrets behind the short rhyme I’m writing for kids today. If you can, please be sure and leave me a comment below and tell me your guess. The one with the right answer (or at least the closest to the right answer) will get their very own a short rhyme.

Twenty-two Words

I found twenty two words today
Just about to fade away.
And even though I wax cliché
I made this word bouquet.

In Tony Funderburk's writing for kids, he recommends a daydream in blue.

You know what I say? I say, if you’re gonna daydream, daydream in blue. There’s more room for daydreamers in the color of blue because there’s more blue around the planet than any other color. I mean…have you ever seen Earth in any of those pictures taken from satellites? Everyone talks about being green. Forget that. I say blue all the way…

Daydream In Blue

Sitting there minding your own business
And a cloud whispers in your ear,
“Hey, why are you readin’ that ol’ schoolbook?
There’s a daydream waitin’ up here.”

Well, you look up from your ol’ schoolbook
And the cloud smiles and says to you,
“Get up out of that boring ol’ brown chair.
Float up here and daydream in blue.”

“I can’t float,” you say to the grey cloud,
I’m a kid…not a cloud like you.
And as much as I’d love to go flying…
It’s not something a real kid can do.”

The cloud laughs and spits out some raindrops
Two big ones plop down in your eyes.
Then all of a sudden you float up…
And soar through the beautiful skies.

You can’t believe how blue the blue is
Through the sky, on earth, and the sea.
It looks like a giant, blue marble…
The shooter of this galaxy.

From behind you can hear the cloud laugh.
“Look at you,” he says, passing by.
“What’s so funny?” you ask with a grin.
“Well, look…you’re up here in the sky.

“You said that you just couldn’t do it.
You said that no real kids could fly.
And yet here you are floating through it…
The beautiful cornflower sky.”

You have to admit that the cloud’s right.
It’s not someone else, this is you
Who’s floating through all of the heavens.
It must be that daydream in blue.

And then you begin to remember
There’s still so much work you must do.
Don’t worry, don’t fret, you can come back…
Come back to your daydream in blue.

Being Silly

Tony Funderburk Posted on May 20, 2013 by TonyMarch 9, 2025
Almost every good book has a plot twist.

Being silly when I’m writing for kids is a big part of what makes it fun for me…and them. If I create a talking toad or a laughing lizard, kids are just fine with that. So, knowing that kids don’t mind if the hero of a story or poem is only 1 inch tall makes for some funny plot twists.

There seem to be so many “rules” for writing. And when I consider how many different kinds of books and authors are a huge success, I wonder who made up the “rules”. Many times I read excerpts from a bestseller, and I just don’t get it. And then I’ll find something I love from a writer who has no success whatsoever. Go figure.

I boil it down to the uniqueness of every human being. While we share so many similarities, we have so many things about us that are uniquely US. With access to the internet, we can connect with others who “get” US. Then we can build a small (or big) community of like-minded readers and writers who can discuss what we like or don’t like about what so-and-so wrote.

My connection tends to be with people like Dr. Suess…and people who love Dr. Suess books. I’d like to think he and I could have been good friends if we lived at similar times in history. And while I’m no Dr. Suess…I can confidently say he was no Tony Funderburk.

Being Silly

You could shine just like a diamond in sunlight.
You could be a star and light the whole dark midnight.
And you could be a daffodil or tiger lily,
But nothin’ quite compares to being silly.

You could make a frown and wrinkle up your whole face
You could walk into a room and freeze the whole place.
By why would you want to make someone so chilly,
When nothin’ quite compares to being silly?

You could be a superhero on a mission
Or a fairy helpin’ people with their wishin’.
You could make a funny face at Uncle Willy.
Yeah, nothin’ quite compares to being silly.

Tony Funderburk's writing for kids includes the occasional sunny day rhyme.

Sunday is a sunny day
Right from the very start…
As long as sunny sunshine shines
In every sunny heart.

And…

If you love this sunny day,
Then make the best of it.
The next day will be sunny too.
A sunny Monday hit.

You got a lotta nerve, and Tony Funderburk likes that about you. It's why he keeps on writing for kids.

Hey kiddos…have you ever heard someone say “you got a lotta nerve?” Usually they don’t mean that in a good way. It’s usually someone thinking you shouldn’t have said or done what you just said or did.

Like maybe you just told a guy his purple mohawk looks goofy. And he says, “Hey, you got a lotta nerve.” Here’s a hint…if you see someone who has a purple mohawk or someone else who has one yellow shoe and one pink shoe…or someone else who likes to eat prunes…

I know you got a lotta nerve, but don’t tell ’em they look goofy.

You can think it to yourself, but don’t say it out loud. You’ll either make ’em mad or make ’em sad. Either way, it’s best to just keep on walkin’ and whistlin’. That other stuff is just small stuff, and you should never let the small stuff get to you.

Today, I’d like to share another way of saying you’ve got a lot of nerve. See if you can tell the difference. And see if any of it describes you…or if you’d like it to…

You got a lotta nerve sayin’ you’re gonna climb that tree,
And run that race,
Or ride that bike,
And camp out in your own teepee.

You got a lotta nerve sayin’ you’re gonna read that book
And learn that math
Or clean your room
And hang your coat on the coat hook.

You got a lotta nerve sayin’ you wanna be your best
And dress real sharp
Or stay real clean
And be happy and not depressed.

You got a lotta nerve sayin’ you wanna do what’s right,
But keep that nerve
And don’t give up
You’re a winner in God’s good light.

Is writing for kids the easiest thing in the world to writer singer Tony Funderburk? Maybe Maybe Not

Do I sit around conjuring up rhymes and riddles and razzamatazz? Maybe…maybe not. Truth be told, I’m not always sitting when ideas for my writing for kids pop into my head.

In fact, I was in my back yard watering the lawn today when a few lines came to me. It was just some thoughts I had about the future. Since I don’t believe the future is set in stone, I thought about how we take things for granted that might not always be taken for granted. Typical things like whether or not the sun will come up tomorrow. You know, there’s really no guarantee that everything will be the way it’s always been.

But that’s no reason to be upset or afraid. It just means we need to get as much learning and understanding as we can. And I’m a firm believer in understanding one another is the key to treating each other better. And treating each other better has a lot more to do with “maybe” than “maybe not”.

Maybe, Maybe Not

Will the sun rise in the morning?
Will the temperature be hot?
Will the sky be blue and sunny?
Well, maybe…maybe not.

Will the songbirds all be singing?
Will the breezes blow a lot?
Will the leaves lift up their laughter?
Well, maybe…maybe not.

Will some words of wisdom visit?
Will the books all have a plot?
Will we read some happy stories?
Well, maybe…maybe not.

Will the world go on forever?
Will the getting all be got?
Will we all be nice to others?
Well, maybe…maybe not.

Stay tuned,
