In search of the Humpback Whale
Each time I begin writing for kids I try to focus on what a kid would find interesting. And I’ve discovered that a lot of things kids find interesting were things I found interesting when I was a kid. Go figure. Turns out…little kids today don’t differ from little kids of days gone by. Like when it comes to the humpback whale.
I wrote about a humpback whale in a book for kids.
As I was browsing the internet, I found some articles on humpback whales, and several were written for little kids. And being a lifelong musician I was intrigued by how big a role the whale’s song played in the news. So, a little ding sounded in my head at the same time a light bulb lit up above me. Then a little voice said…
“Hello…Tony…duh…you should include a poem/story about the song of humpback whales in your books for kids.”
With a thwack on my forehead I replied…
“Wow, you’re exactly right little voice. Thank you! I’ll go do that right away.”
And a couple days later with a couple dozen revisions I came up with, “Hey Little Mate”. It’s available as Kindle download HERE. There’s a paperback version available on Amazon, too. Right HERE. And here’s a short clip from the book…
Hey Little Mate
Hey little mate, let’s go set sail
In search of the songs from the humpback whale,
The one with the smile and the powerful tail.
Go get your gear, let’s go set sail.
Hey little mate, the sail’s up high.
The wind’s at our backs with a clear, blue sky.
So keep to the rail with a vigilant eye
Wave to dolphins dashing by…
Arrh, now be off with you matey. And be quick about buyin’ the book. Mind you, I don’t take kindly to dawdlers.
