OK…I admit it. I have some opinions about politics.

And I’m absolutely sure that truth trumps party.

And so many of the things I hear politicians say (in all parties) are merely paying lip service to cliché.

In fact…a few years back I wrote a song about it, and it still applies…probably always will. What do you think?

Once upon a time there was this world. And it was good. And beautiful. And pure.

Fast forward about 6,000 years…and we have this world. And it’s not so good. It’s messed up. And purity is long gone.

All around us are stories of tragedy, catastrophe, and calamity. Thieves, liars, and murderers.

But I don’t think we should throw our hands up in the air and give in. Or leave the fixing to politicians who’d rather line their pockets from the wealth they redistribute.

It’s been about a year since I released a series of what I called the story time podcasts. They originated on another site I used to have called Ton-O-Fun Tunes. But I just didn’t want to perpetuate two blogs and identities, so I put everything together here.

And I’ve added a lot of new “fans”, “followers”, and friends to my blog and social sites in the past year. So…I thought it would be fun to serve ‘em up again so new visitors could enjoy. Just in case you’re having a difficult time getting enough sleep…

Here are 3 tips from a singer songwriter that are almost guaranteed to cure your troubles:

1. Turn off the TV…or at least only turn it to the political channel…
2. Go to bed at the same time each night (or day)…
3. Listen to some lullaby songs or nice, soft instrumental music

What? You didn’t think I’d leave out music, did you?

I’ve hidden a song to cover tip #3. Once you find it, download it and get comfortable and get ready to fall fast asleep.

Drifting Off

(No matter how small)

OK…admittedly I’m a guy. So maybe I’ve never been a shopaholic because I’m such a stereotypical guy on the issue of shopping. In my role as a singer songwriter, I’ve written about shopping on more than one occasion…but I don’t believe I’ve ever given it a “plus” in my ledger.

I don’t have anything against shopping, mind you. In fact, point me to the nearest Apple store, or the nearest music gear shop, and I can spend an inordinate amount of time in either one. But I don’t go often. And I don’t go merely to “shop”. I go to buy. And here’s the thing…

I really, really, really don’t like a frenzied crowd when I’m going to buy something. And I don’t want to buy simply because “it’s that time”  or  “everything’s on sale”.

And…this next part is gonna be somewhat controversial…we don’t celebrate the “holiday season” in the Funderburk household. At this time of year we celebrate Thanksgiving (hope you had a good one yesterday, by the way) and Christmas. Both of these are days we’re extra special thankful to God for our lives and for His love. We don’t need lots of presents and/or an over abundance of food to make us remember. We enjoy those things as much as anyone, but they’re not necessary to the reason.

So…I hope you won’t let yourself get all caught up in the retail “reason for the season” this year. Just love your family, enjoy your freedom, and remember Who and where the source of it all is.

…then you’ve probably got Road Stories

Here’s one of mine…

Well, this is sort of like 3 in one.

After a long, almost 24 hour drive from Kansas to South Carolina, we pulled into the hotel where we’d be staying and playing. Luckily we had the rest of the day and night before we started. So, we caught up on sleep that evening. And the next day I needed to get a document notarized. We went to the town hall where a notary public had been recommended. I asked a guy if I could get my document notarized. He asked me what the document was. I asked him why he needed to know, and I promptly got the in-the-movies-southern-good-ol’-boy third degree…

“Boy!” he exclaimed, “we don’t appreciate smart aleck long hair types like you around here.”

I would have thought it was a joke, but he didn’t have a smile within a hundred miles of his face.

“Never mind,” I said.

And we went to a convenience store to ask where else a notary public might be. One was pointed out to me by the clerk who seemed to have the same high opinion of me I’d just experienced at the town hall. But we ignored the lack of pleasantries and walked a a few blocks to the other office. I hope I’m not being politically incorrect when I say this… A very nice black lady came to the front of the office and said she was the notary public and that she’d be glad to notarize the document for me. It took about a minute, cost less than $5, and it was all done with smiles and kindness. Nice change…what a concept.

Later that night, after the evening’s worth of music had been played, we were out for a walk in front of the motel when the owner drove up to us. “What are ya’ll doin’ out here?” he asked.

“Just goin’ for a walk before we go to bed.” I replied.

“Well, I suggest you just go on to your room. You don’t need to be out here without something like this…” and he pointed to a gun he had in his car’s console. “People end up shot or missin’ if they’re out too late.”

So, we opted to go to bed. The next day, sure enough, we heard a report of a killing in a field not far from our room and the motel. Yikes.

We played that establishment for 2 weeks before moving on to our next stop. It felt like 2 months. Pitch black walls, some guy in the back making wolf calls almost every night, and smoke so thick you could see pillars of it from the canister lighting. This story is true, so I’ll keep the name of the town and its people anonymous to protect the innocent…if there were any.

Thankfully, I’ve never gone back. Don’t expect to…

Ain’t Got Nothin’ Over Me

Have you heard any of those marketers who talk about working on your laptop on a beach?

Of course, most of that is hype and silliness. It can definitely be done, but most hard-working entrepreneurs don’t live that life.

However; that being said…I used to live a life very much like that…the life of a full-time traveling musician. And a lot of times I found myself on a beach during the day, playing music at night, and thinking up the next songs to write. I wasn’t rich, but it sure felt like it sometimes. I’d pinch myself and say “Just think, Tony…someone is actually paying you to sing and play music!”

This evening I went through a bunch of my old lyrics and found a song I recorded in a little beach hotel near Padre Island, Texas. It’s not a high quality recording, but it’s listenable. It’s a song about a girl (big surprise that a musician would write such a song, eh) who I only saw a couple of times. It wasn’t a physical relationship, and to tell the truth, I think bicycling in the salt air did more to inspire me than anything else.

Anyway…just thought you might get a kick out of the short version of the inside story. And, if you’re so inclined, you can download the MP3 of the original recording just below. If you have the right sort of player, you should even be able to see my original handwritten lyrics with the original date of 1/10/1987 and my signature. Woo hoo!

Download “Makenzie”

Through a reasonably random set of circumstances, this evening, I stumbled upon the lyrics to an old Welsh lullaby… “All Through The Night”. (see below)

That song has a very special place in my musical life. It was the very first song I ever received a “1″ for in solo vocal competition.

If you’re not familiar with school music competitions, a “1″ is actually the best score you can get. Once I got that score…my life as a singer was sealed in diamonds.

My eighth grade choir director spent hours of her personal time working with me. She taught me to use my breathing diaphragm in a way I have always used since then. And I feel certain her care and attention to vocal details gave me the zeal to train for 10′s of thousands of hours…singing and loving every minute of it. To this day lullaby songs are some of my favorite to write and sing.

Bedtime Buckaroos

Looking through my old files, and I found some of my own 80′s music that I recorded as demos but never took any further.

I actually recorded a bunch of songs like this in hotel rooms, or bars, or even in trailers while I was on the road. So…not high quality, but fun to “look back on”.

I know all musicians are supposed to be tortured souls who need to escape the confines and restrictions of this mortal, flawed world.

I know we’re supposed to be seekers always searching but never truly finding.

I know we’re supposed to be experts on the myriad of ways to “expand the mind”.

I know…but…I never.

No, I have to say I never did drugs. Didn’t even smoke pot…which is now so legal here in Colorado it’s more prevalent than Starbuck’s.

Through the years I’ve received “tips” of marijuana, cocaine, and other things from people who enjoyed my performance on stage. I know they’d be aghast at how I flushed it all down the toilet on my breaks. But I did write a song back in the late 80′s or early 90′s using lots of drug references. You can download it from this blog. And if you were a subscriber to my podcast, you’d get it automatically without having to download it…so much easier.  :-)

In Your Dreams

My own personal music business used to be full time traveling.

Then, life took a few turns (as is always does), and I stopped the full-time traveling, got a house, created a cool Apple Micro Studio…and…

…now my own personal music business is writing and singing my own songs. I don’t spend time learning anyone’s idea of “top 40″ anymore. And I couldn’t be happier about that.

Analog Man

Highlighting Words In My Singer Songwriter World

If you’ve visited my blog before, you may have noticed that I’ve written a lot of music for kids. Well, in the past 6 months I’ve been writing some stories for kids, and some have even been included in my podcast. (and I haven’t been podcasting a lot lately…oops)

I’ve enjoyed working with a writing coach who’s helped me learn a lot about the world of children’s literature. Very cool stuff…

Now…I have some projects in the works for combining music for kids and stories for kids. An observant singer songwriter is always on the lookout for ways to jump start musical ideas. Sometimes lyrics from other singer songwriters spark a new idea. Sometimes it’s almost by accident.

Check out the lyrics to my song “Train of Thought”…

This song came about because I had some music going on in my head but at first I couldn’t think of what I wanted to say.

I kept going through some of my usual idea starter techniques I use, but they weren’t working. I got a phone call from a friend who asked what I was doing. I said I was trying to get a song going, but I just couldn’t get a good train of thought started. It wasn’t until I got off the phone that the idea for the title popped into my head. And it fit in just right with the music I had already started. Then words started to flow, and the rest was a blast.

Oddly enough, the first couple of lines were inspired by a Star Trek movie. Real fans of that movie series will remember Star Trek VI: Undiscovered Country. And the theme behind the movie got me off and running. I thought a comparison between heaven and earth would be a cool thing to write metaphorically about. So, I set out to write a clear, yet possibly incomprehensible train of thought from the perspective of actually being that train of thought. Does that make sense? Well, it did to me for some reason. So I just kept at it as the words flowed. Soon I had a train of thought song.

Think about it…what can dance around an open campfire, sneak aboard a starship, drive software, weave, fill, help, drop, etc. and doesn’t even need to eat?

I know…weird, huh?

Which is more important? And which one is worthy of a celebration?

Don’t get me wrong…I don’t have anything against chocolate, bunnies, or eggs. I have fond childhood memories of Easter egg hunts and Easter baskets. We got new clothes, and families got together for some great food and great times. But we also thanked God for His Son’s sacrifice. Things aren’t quite that way in most of America anymore. That’s why I wrote this song and, now, I’ve put it in a video.

There’s a lot of talk online these days about “the cloud”. In digital and computing terms this is just a way to do things wirelessly and wherever and whenever. If it’s done right and well, it may make things a lot easier for a lot of people. The cloud I’m showcasing in my latest story time audio podcast is an actual cloud. He’s not as glamorous as the computing cloud…but…well, I won’t give anymore away.

We sing and write about things a lot of people don’t like or want to hear.

But…so what.

Most other Christians in this world face the same obstacles. If you’re a Christian, and you feel like the world is against you, guess what? You’re right.

Ok…that’s a problem…but let’s focus on solutions and our Creator.

In this world you won’t be friends with everyone. In fact, the majority of this world will even hate you. But Jesus said “if they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.” We’re not better than Him, and if He is for us…who cares who’s against us.

Be strong. Be of good courage. Be joyful. Be willing. And be ready to give a reason for the hope that lies within. Remember…We Win.

These things will help you overcome even Impossible Odds…

Technology is so cool. With my iPhone, which I keep in a small pocket on the side of my jeans, I capture video and photos of things I want to remember.

Then, I can simply add a song I wrote and create a movie…which I can share with anyone or everyone within hours of filming the footage.

Nice.

I just spent the past hour and a half putting this fun little video together. The song is called “Feed Me”. It was actually played on KBCO in Boulder, Colorado back in 1989 when I wrote it. They featured it in a segment they called “Home Grown”. Little did they know what they were playing.  Anyway…hope you get a kick out of it…

I’ve had a very, very long day today. So I might need this story time podcast/video more than anyone.

I started out with my usual audio podcast, and I decided to convert it to a video podcast. Well, I’ve been working on images, clips, audio, and new software for a few more hours than I thought I would be. But the good news is…I think I have a video podcast for you this week.

This week’s story time is based on a personal experience I had when I was a little dude of no more than 4 or 5. The story is called “Once Upon A Sunday”. It’s a very short story, but I think your little dudes and dudettes will get a kick out of it. Or else it’ll bore them to sleep…which is the best use of story time anyway. So…enjoy…and let me know how the video came out for you.

A lot of moms and dads have told me their kids love my song called “Don’t” because it’s so “goofy”. Since they said they love it…I’m guessing goofy is good. What do you think? Should music for kids be goofy? Or should it always teach? Or inspire? Or…what?

When I interact with kids, I see their eyes light up if I talk about things with a goofy or wacky perspective. I love watching their imagination kick into high gear. Kids haven’t had all their superpowers squelched by the world, so they think about things like flying elephants. And talking monkeys. And red dogs. And so on.

And I love to write and sing songs that appeal to their laughing imagination. That’s how “Don’t” was written. It says don’t do something, and each something is something you couldn’t or wouldn’t do anyway. Even kids enjoy irony. It’s fun to watch.

Anyway…here are the words.

“Don’t”
Don’t grab a tiger by the tail…don’t go dancin with a whale.
Don’t rub elbows with a snake…don’t eat corn flakes with a rake.
Don’t hold lightning in your hand…don’t stick your head down in the sand.
Don’t chew gum that’s full of rocks…and don’t go chasin’ chicken pox.

Don’t put your knee inside your ear…don’t just whisper when you cheer.
Don’t try to make a monkey shine…don’t say that two and two is nine.
Don’t fly and eat the cheesy moon…don’t build a snowman when it’s June
Don’t leave your ice cream in the sun…and don’t have fun unless it’s fun

Get Your Name In The Book of Life…

no, not that “book”

It’s ironic to me…automobile insurance is mandatory in America. You can’t drive your vehicle around for long without risking your driver’s license if you’re caught without auto insurance. Why? Because “they” know sooner or later the unexpected will happen, and you won’t be able to pay for it if you’re not insured.

So…why is a Christian singer talking about the irony of mandatory auto insurance? See, it’s like this…driving a car runs the risk of an accident, and if it’s expensive, you won’t have to worry because insurance will “cover it”. Well, living your life runs the risk of dying. In fact, it’s not a possibility…it’s a guarantee. Yet so many people go through their whole life without “afterlife insurance”. They don’t even bother to look into it. They may just be putting it off until it’s too late. And then there’s no way to get it anymore.

I happen to believe, not by blind faith but by overwhelming, compelling evidence, there’ll be an afterlife. And there’ll be two possible places to spend eternity. I’ve already gotten my insurance. It wasn’t mandatory, and I don’t have to pay the premiums…which is great because I could never afford them. No, the premium is paid in full, as a gift to me specifically, and all I have to do is believe.

How utterly cool is that?

My suggestion is simple: look into it. That’s all. Don’t take my word for anything. And if I’m wrong about this one thing, please show me. The one thing is this: I’m saved from eternal separation from God, my Creator. Here’s how it happened. There really was a man named Jesus. He really did die for my sins. He really did rise from the dead. He really is God the Son. And He really does love me that much. All he asks from me is to believe it. I do. I’m saved. It’s nice knowing I have insurance just in case death occurs…’cause it will.

I got my name in the “book of life”, and I can celebrate forever. You should “(get your name in the) Book of Life“.
